What I’ve learnt during the first week of the IP ?

During the first week of the IP, I’ve learnt a lot of different things thanks to different lectures. I especially appreciated the one given by Michael Holzmayer about the generations. Even if I already knew that there are different generations, I didn’t really realized how different they are and what are the characteristics of each of them. As a future teacher, I think it’s important to know which kind of pupils I will have in my class so that I can adapt my teaching practices and understand them better. I was also very interested in the lecture given by Jacques Folon about social media and privacy. Nowadays, so many people are using social medias, but do they know what are the risks? Moreover, a lot of children already have an account on social medias like Facebook or Twitter, and most of them are totally unaware of the dangers. As a teacher, and because today the social medias are part of our day life, it is really important to teach them how to use them – and Internet in general – in a safely way.
I also learnt interesting things thanks to the workshops that were organized. The one I preferred was the exchange with HELMo’s students on Friday morning because my group was really involved and we had an interesting debate about the use of social media – and ICT – during classes. I noticed that the Belgian students don’t seem to be very motivated to use ICT with their pupils because they are afraid of not controlling it. They think that technology is going too fast and if they had to use it in classes, they wouldn’t feel at ease with it. So our conclusion was that the teachers should become a special training about ICT, so that they could know how it works, see concrete examples of use, and they should have the necessary material in every school.

The lectures and the workshops we had helped me to understand better how the school will probably be in a few years and how I can adapt my practice. Nevertheless, I’m looking forward to next week because I want to see how ICT can be concretely used at school, so that I can use these ideas with my future pupils.
As previously mentioned, I think that every teacher should have a specific training about ICT. At my university, in Lausanne, we had every year a few lessons about it: we learnt how to use some programs and then, we had to integrate them in our practice. In my opinion, it was useful, but I still have the impression that using ICT seems to be a waste of time for some of my colleagues. They don’t seem to see all the advantages of it.
As a student, I know how concrete examples are important in our training, and especially with ICT, because it’s a new way of teaching, we never had it before as pupils. So I think it’s probably one of the point that the institution could improve. For example, it would be nice to have lessons about each kind of media (pictures, videos, Internet, social media, etc.), and knowing how we can integrate them in our practice, and for which kind of work (languages, sciences, art, etc.).
Of course, if some teachers don’t try to use ICT with their class, it is also because of the material conditions. Some schools are not equipped at all, so it seems harder for the teachers to use ICT with their pupils.

« A good lesson using technology is at first a good teaching lesson? » I think that using new technologies at school has advantages (motivation, auto-evaluation, autonomous work, etc.), but teachers shouldn’t use them without any pedagogic reason; they should be used in a useful way, otherwise, it doesn’t make any sense. The teachers who plan their lesson integrating ICT have to think about the added values. So that’s what we will have to think about when we will have to plan our lessons next week.
An uncompromising vision, but not disillusioned, on the situation of ICT in Schools.

“Teach the way kids are learning.”
Times are changing. A new generation brings new media (or vice versa?) and thus education has to change accordingly. In the IP generation Y we learn how new technologies can affect our work at school: new devices, the appearance of social media, augmented reality and video content are going to shape education sooner than later.
These new possibilities add up to the existing canon of teaching methods – like in many other part of our everyday life “convergence” is the keyword. We need to find a good balance between new technologies and old ways of learning, each of which has specific advantages and disadvantages. We choose the appropriate way to teach and combine different tools and media according to the specific situation (“Personal Learning Environment”). By arguing for or against a certain technology we try to find the “added value” of this way of teaching.
Anyway, before we choose the method, we have to know the goal of our lesson. The use of new technologies can’t replace a well planned lesson and a good relationship between the teacher and the students. It is just important to keep the possibilities of the new technologies in mind and to be open for the advantages they may bring (without, obviously, neglecting the possible disadvantages).
Personally, I think that the IP provides a good mixture between larger concepts of education and detailled solutions for our work. What could be improved is the linkage between the lectures. In retrospect it turns out that the single topics relate to and depend on each other. I’m keen to see how things will be connected and further developed in the course of the coming week.

IP Generation Y : Teaching with new (social) media? What have I learnt during this week?
What I learnt what I’d like to learn :
During this week, I’ve discovered many different media I had never heard about. I got to know more about the generations. I’m studying to be a mathematics teacher so I only knew about maths apps or websites & now I’m already thinking of how I can include the new ones in my future lessons. Next week, I’d like to learn how to use these technology more concretely in class.
I also learnt about different school systems & how school is abroad while speaking with other students. I realised some countries are more open-minded than mine (about including technology at school). I’d like more technology to be introduced in schools. I know it’s not going to be easy because some teachers still think the old methods are the best ones, some others feel unconfident about using technology during the lessons or think it’s too difficult but it has to change. I’m not saying that all the lessons have to use ICT but we need to use them when it has sens.
But appart from all this, I’ve learnt about other cultures, countries, habits … which, according to me, is definitely an important part of this IP. Because this IP isn’t only about learning about technology & new media, it’s also about human discoveries.

According to me, to be able to teach something with technology we, teachers, need to be able to teach without technology. Using technology during lessons is a way to improve them & also to motivate students. It’s not all to use technology. It must have sens !
A positive thing & a negative thing about this IP Generation Y compared to my training ?
I’ve discovered websites & applications that aren’t specifically done for maths but that I can still use during a lesson. During my training, we got to know specific applications & we use interactive whiteboard during some lessons. Eventhough I was a bit afraid about having lectures in English, everything was easy to understand. I’ve even improved my English a bit so I’m glad.
What is quite different from my training is that I’m used to do many exercises & work more on logic things. I have to admit I miss mathematics a bit (I’m not crazy). In addition, days are really long so it gets really tiring to focus in another language but everything I learn during the day is worth it.
What are the advantages & disadvantages of ICT for teachers & students ?
Technology allows adapted teaching. Everyone can advance at their own pace, therefore, students are not pressured as they can move forward at their own pace. The”One size fits all” mentality slowly decreases and the children can feel more confident about themselves due to the fact that they do not have to keep up with their peers. The autonomy that technology brings is essential to every student’s development. Self-learning also leaves time for personal feedback from the teacher which provides more effective teaching & learning. It does not only have to be used at school. Homework would seem more interesting to do virtually than from a book. Moreover, as technology is a big part of a student’s life, it is necessary that we include it in a child’s education. We cannot deny that students are dependent on technology, so we have to adapt our teaching methods.
What about the health ? If we over-use technology in our daily life it can damage our eyes. All the waves, they also have impacts on our health. Some impacts aren’t clear for now but it certainly isn’t good to be surrounded by too much waves however we can’t avoid them totally because we are in a constant contact. So we have to be careful.
What about sociability ? I think that we must be cautious about this. On one hand, there is a lot of communication because you exchange virtual material, such as, documents, pictures, power points & eventually homework. On the other hand, it reduces direct and personal interactions. Technology makes school quite individual; we can even imagine lessons that will be given between countries. For example it can be quite advantageous for languages, one is given the opportunity to meet a teacher from abroad eventually continue interacting online, for example one can plan to do some lessons together. Therefore, technology helps socialisation & motivates learning in students. You want to be understood & you want to understand so you work for it. So every idea on this subject must be taken into account. We have to use technology but we must not “over-use” it.
What’s the space ICT and Media tools can take in a lesson? How can they improve this lesson ? When do they not help ?
The use of technology in schools is of a delicate matter. It’s something you have to think about because there are subjects that you can’t teach properly with the only use of technology. For example : writing. To teach a child how to write, it is essential that he/she tries on paper. You can use videos to demonstrate how to write letters, however, it’s important that the children learn to write the words themselves, learning kinaesthetically; it is essential for writing.
Every subject that has to be taught is an opportunity to use technology but as I said before I don’t think we have to use technology just to say “I used technology”. So we just have to find the most efficient way to use what we discovered this week (& before) in our classes. And enjoy teaching with technology !

My comment:
During the first week I have learned new websites that can be used in a class (like Socrative and Quizlet, Fakebook). I didn’t know about them. Also, the lesson about Social Media and Privacy has been very interesting. Most people are unaware of the way their information is stored and kept. For next week I am looking forward on the way Social Media can be integrated in a lesson.
Although I am a computer and video games fan, I was sometimes skeptical about the benefits of using social media in class. But after the lectures I have seen the actual way and actual methods. Still, I think there is a certain balance that has to be kept. You need to adapt to the context (the schools resources, the class, and the children’s parents). Also, you need to make sure children are not exposing themselves to any danger, especially on the internet. It is best to keep to apps with children in elementary school, and not the internet. You need the parents support and involvement in order to make sure the child respects some boundaries, regarding technology, even at home.
In Romania, most teachers are not looking forward to the use of technology. Sure, college teachers use it more often, with or without their students (for conferences or stuff like that), but in lower education, it is not common for a teacher to prepare a presentation even if they may have the technical equipment. The old fashioned way of teaching is not bad of course, that is the way we have learned until now but we must also be open minded, especially if we have the means of achieving the same things and also motivating students a bit more. Different does not necessarily mean bad. We must keep into mind that in 20 years, the future students will have parents that have Social media as a part of their life. You can’t just keep them out of it completely. Still, there are disadvantages for school without the financial means. It is important to keep in mind that Social Media can be helpful with students with special needs. Also we must not forget the importance of actual books and actual friends.
Social media can be a danger to real socialization and a real social life. The excessive use of Facebook is also unhealthy. Sure, it is good for quick communication and document sharing but this is suitable with bigger students.
The important role of the teacher must never fall behind the role of technology, no matter how advanced that technology is. A good lesson, whatever its orientation, is good because of the teacher, not because of the technology.

This week I have learned a lot of new ideas, of which some have a bigger or a better applicability in the teaching process.
For me, Socrative is a new and interesting instrument that I will use whenever the opportunity. The online platform, that allows the creation of online questioners (anonymous or not), and also the quick results of the statistical information can be used with most subjects. Also, it offers the possibility of a simple and quick way of collecting answers or votes.
I think Socrative can be a useful tool in the teaching/evaluation process as long as we consider 2 important aspects: the amount of time that is given to the platform and the way you create the questions.
Regarding the program of next week, the making of the lesson using Social Media will be a challenge as I have never done it before.
In the teaching-learning process at small ages, human interaction is irreplaceable and the use of technical methods needs to be limited so that it does not endanger the creation of human relations and friendships.
Social media can add values to the teaching-learning process by showing some theoretical aspects in a practical way and it is a way to make students involved but social media cannot replace real human interaction and real human relations which are the most important part of functioning adults.

In the days that we have done this past week , I want to start by saying that I have found very interesting and productive , which I appreciated other points of view known to him concerning the use of new technologies in schools . I see very interesting address this issue because I believe that education should be at the level of society , continually progresses and modernized . And we, as future teachers , we must keep abreast of all the possibilities offered to improve the education system and to be more competitive in our work.
During this week I have seen that if we get into this, we realize that there is still much to be discovered and applied in education, and we must continually formed to not be left behind .
I have seen very important class of copyright , because she made me see that we must take into account that there are different laws in different countries and meet them for not misusing technology .
And I ‘ve found it’s very complex and we know driving, I personally found that I did not know many things that I thought I knew .
I think importantly, the use of social networks in the education system , because I think is a good way of communication between students and even teachers . It may be helpful to motivate students in their studies. Although I believe that all this should have a lot of control for the safety of students .
I liked to see how these days , we have developed the importance of cooperative work , creating teams with different views where you can put your opinion, and you can meet the rest of peers, learning and growing as a teachers.
I would like for this next week, should learn how to introduce new technologies in school. Because I think it should be a gradual process and I think slow.
The most important thing is to know train teachers without forget the traditional methods of education, because someday you may need to use them.
We have to learn with new technologies but never stop wasting the teacher’s role, because without them, nothing would be possible.
I think a good teacher, you will know educate using the technologies, but knowing the problems they may have.

I think nowadays the News tecnologies are improving, I believe that in the future will be essential to our lives and that as future teachers we must know perfectly, not only know them but also use them. I think it’s a good alternative for learning and motivate students (of any age), in our video, and there are schools that have changed textbooks for tablets, honestly it seems a bit excessive but it makes me think what will happen in the future.
With this program the truth is that it made me realize that new technologies can really help quite time to teach and students to learn.
This week we have given many things, but really the topic I liked and caught my attention was the copyright, not really know the topic in depth and the importance. I think this topic should inform everything to everyone and especially future teachers.
I have to also say that I disagree with other subjects, for example, the video that put us where students 6 years using Twitter, but neither the students use the facebook, I agree it is using a specific application for students,as happened in our class, we used a program called “Ed Modo”, he teacher used it to upload the homeworks and information. It was very interesting, but instead, you use some applications that use adults disagree.
In conclusion, to say that he thought he was going to learn but it is looking less interesting and I think if I can serve to my future.

Nowadays the new technologies are the base of the universal communication. By means of them we have access to all the information of current importance almost in time royal. This also concerns the school where one sees reflected in the education and has supposed important changes in the methodology of it processed education.
I think that it is very beneficial since it adapts the knowledge with the reality, with the interests and intentions of the pupils. The incorporation of the strategies of intervention and instruments of learning a across the TICS helps the pupils to extract the maximum divided to his possibilities.
I believe is an innovative route and that has to promote his education. Besides the teachers to have a good formation, him to give nobody obsolete. The tics grant wealth-producing opportunities as favor the social relations, the cooperative learning, the development of new skills, new forms of construction of the knowledge and the development of the capacities of creativity, communication and reasoning. This week has seemed to me to be very interesting or this that has served me to realize the importance of the new tecnhnology.

During this week I learnt some interesting things. There are some platforms I did not know before like socrative, quizlet, fakebook and I think for teaching they are really good and useful.
The lectures were really good and sufficient. I wasn’t expecting that I would realize everything that teachers said, but that happened and I’m really glad with that. The ones given by Michael were really interesting. He did a good job with the prezy’s because they were so dynamic and precise. The good thing about the lectures for us is that we can see different ways and opinions from other teachers from other countries. And yes I think we are able to adapt to our generation but we must have to do some changes. Using the ICTs can be really motivating for the students but they are also really distracting. I believe that they should have to be more controlled (like blocking some websites so they can be focus on their work) and I think that the government should create an obligated platform for the students where they would have some tools similar to social networks (facebook, youtube, twitter) and other tools, but with the exact functions in order to educational stuff.
I believe at the time it is because the students, fortunately or unfortunately, pay more attention to a virtual image (even if there is text in that) that reading books full of texts. Even when they don’t want to learn, the images, some of them, stay in their heads more easily than a sentence read in a book.
Confronting with my daily formation, I like the rhythm here. In both places (Portugal and here), we have autonomous work, but here we do our works during the class and in my country we do almost everything at home. The only things I didn’t like it was doing a video and the workshop from Friday because I don’t want to be a teacher neither work in that part of multimedia.

Nowadays the world is changing really fast and teachers must move on the same direction. It is a priority to learn the new devices that are appearing every day and try to apply them in the class. Education is one of the most important tools humanity has so it has to be updated with the very last technologies.
In this sense, the IP is proving very useful. It is helping us to know which are the new technologies advices available for us and how to manage with them. Also, it is being a space to get new resources.
In addition, I think one of the most important things I have been learning during the whole week are the different ways of teaching that each country has. Sharing information and listening to other classmates it is proving really enriching. In this kind of events one of the main things is the exchange of experiences with other people and we must take advantage of the situation.
On the other hand, I am looking forward to keep learning more new resources. I would like to learn how to apply the technology devices in our daily work because I considere learning new applications and how to use them at the same level of importance.
The IP is also really interesting because of its direct application. Almost all the things we have saw in the lectures are useful for our future development. I think I will be able to adapt technologies to the reality of my class in order to obtain the best performance of the students. The use of tools like Padlet, Quizlet, Socrative or Fakebook will help me to get nearer to the students and to create a good teaching-learning process.
To conclude, I do not agree with the sentence written. We do not have to confuse that the use of new technologies is a means and not an end. Using in a wrong way the new devices is as bad as using paper and pencil in a bad way. Using technology in a class do not imply to be a better class. What is important is to know how to use it to get the best possible performance.

During the first week of ip, we have received information that probably still did not have as a teaching method , different ways to use social media, and how we can affect life forms as acceptance criteria for the use of large companies ( Facebook, twitter etc … )
The interventions that have attracted my attention are diverse, both as Michael with Generations and Democracy 2.0, as Mr. Jacques privacy of social networks , or even the use of photos and copyright .
As a future educator I think opportune to grow along with the time, because it is a work in constant change, but I think it is a very sensitive issue and we found quite a few social gaps when using them , because we can find people who they can not access them.
Classes and work seem very interesting , because not only serve you to apply your education system , but for other things like studies , presentations etc … For class, I think the best tool is the ” Socrative ” . The fakebook is also interesting because it helps students to look for the person concerned , and is something that is used today (Facebook )
I think it is important to use new technologies , but then to use social networks like Facebook or twitter , is a big step , and that should be followed meticulously to avoid influencing students bad ways .

During this week we learnt some useful programs that make learning easier and improve the relationship between teacher/student and improvetheir interaction. Tools like prezi, fakebook or quizlet help us run away from de traditional way of a teaching a classe, in a way to investigate and explore new ways of catching the students attention and become an interesting and dynamic theoric class.
I think the lectures during the last week will become useful for my career, although I’m in social education they can guide me in future workshops and apply some tools learnt during this IP. I think that use of the ICTs is really attractive but they are also distractive for the pupils. About the presented sentence I think that a given lesson with dynamic technology and in some way interact can be a good lesson. However, I believe a good class also depends on the teacher and is capacity to interact and teach the students.
I consider that technologies depreciate the traditional “pen and paper”. In my opinion the ICT are more and more cutting the physical relationships and the human beings are more becoming dependent of technologic objects like smartphones, computers and tablets.

The things I really appreciated from the first week of the IP are the different programs (such as Socrative, Prezi, Fakebook, to name a few) to work with ; the lecture about the generations in general ; the following workshop by choosing a card and then describing our generation ; the filming and cutting was very interesting as well and the discussions with the HELMo students.
I had to admit that times are changing, even more and faster than I thought. With all the new (social) media, education has to change as well.
In Belgium and Luxembourg, society is quite conservative, but with all the new social media, we have to ‘adapt’, or at least learn how to use it. In some schools Wifi and smartphones are abandoned, so you are not allowed to have one in class.
Isn’t this a step backwards? In my opinion, we have to learn how to use new technologies in order to teach the children how and how not to use them. And when we learn how to use them, maybe we get an other point of view and can so integrate them in the educational process. But to succeed in this, society has to change.
I’m now always speaking about that society, but who is that society? We are! We have to change and we have to be open-minded. If we want to change things, society wants to change them (even in a conservative country). Be curious all the time?
By knowing the advantages and disadvantages of the different ICT, we can use them in education. But this doesn’t mean at all that we have to abolish the traditional way of teaching. A good mixture of both of them is the way to success. And when you want to work with ICT, always have a plan B (and C), because sometimes when you really don’t need it, technology fails.
For me, the keywords of the week are: be curious, be updated, be open-minded.
I hope that for the next week, we can link the different lectures more, and maybe connect the new knowledge with the practical part.

I highlight : « The only thing I would change would be to actually have some tutorials about some of the elements we’ve talked about or had to work with. I was lucky because in my group I had two people that had already worked editing videos and such. If not I would have had a hard time creating my group’s video. »
